Evaluation

My biggest strength was how I recorded all of the shots accurately in order to produce smooth transitions in my final product. This allowed me to show that I could use the following effectively: Match on Action, 180 degree rule and the shot/reverse shot. I feel I could have made the clip better though due to the short conversation and lack of music at the start of the scene when one of the characters (Zac) walks into the room.

When my previous partner Will dropped Media which left me to start a-fresh, this allowed me to create a better product as I feel that the previous product that we were once creating was low quality. By working with Joe and Zac, I was able to produce a improved version of my final sequence as my previous one was not finished.

I never took GCSE Media when I was in High School. However, this Preliminary task has helped me learn about the four types of media language apart from editing. When I use to edit on my own during High School. I knew nothing about cinematography etc. But now after having an experience, I feel that I have developed many Media skills which can help me progress in the future.

Overall I feel that my product was a success and considering the obstacle I faced (dropping media), I feel that I did well and produced a good final product showing the 3 rules.

Audience Feedback

The feedback that I was given was fairly positive. They said I had made the clips look smooth (they fit together really well). However, my audience did not like how small the conversation was. They also believed that I could have made my clip better by adding some audio at the start of the scene. Overall, I think my Final Sequence was a success.

Filming Update 2

My previous partner Will dropped Media leaving me to do my Preliminary Task on my own. I thankfully however made friends with two people in my Media class. Joe and Zach. They helped me with my recording in order to get some complete footage that I could edit and complete the examples of 180 degree rule, shot/reverse shot and match on action.

Filming Update 1

Me and Will have synchronised the clips successfully and they look good. All we need to do now is record a conversation and show Will (person B) walking out the door. We have also added background music to fit the mood.

Will has now recently dropped Media and I cannot complete my preliminary task with him. However, 2 of my friends have offered to help me with the equipment and acting. Therefore i still should be able to complete my preliminary task.

Storyboard and Shooting Script

Here is the script which I created:

Here is the storyboard which I created for our task:

Decisions

Me and Will have decided to film at school for our Prelim task instead of outside school. This makes it quick and easily to be able to upload the content that we have recorded quickly onto the Macs. Also, me and Will feel a lot more comfortable filming in school than filming in public. We decided to do it in the Media room where we are currently working so we can upload quickly etc.

Initial Ideas

Here is the layout of my Initial Ideas. This allowed me to add simple ideas that we thought of at the start of the project so we could add them to our Preliminary Task.

Technique Research

I have to demonstrate three techniques within my clip that I will be recording and editing, using Final Cut Pro. We first had to find out what these techniques mean and how to use them within our clip that we are going to record. Here are some examples of the techniques that I have drawn to give you an understanding of what we will be showing you in our Preliminary Clip.

Match on Action

This technique is where the editor cuts from one shot to another view that matches the first shot's action. For example, someone walking or to a door and opening the door. The camera changes from the side that he was opening the door to the other side of the door where it shows the actor opening the door.

Shot/Reverse Shot

The shot reverse shot is where a character is shown looking at another character, and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character. For example, It is like someone meeting up to have a conversation and then the camera changes to view the person that is currently talking in the clip.

180 Degree Rule

The 180 Degree Rule is where two characters sustain a left/right relationship to one another on a 180 degree axis. For example, as you can see below, the picture shows two people communicating with each other on a left to right relationship. I have added a bush on the left side of the example and a tree on the right side of the example to show the left to right relationship, the 180 degree rule.

Groups

Why am I working with Will Madden?

One of the reasons why I am working with Will Madden is because he is my friend and we have known each other for 5 years. Therefore, I am comfortable sharing ideas with him when we are working together in Media. Unlike me, Will took Media for one of his GCSE's at Endon High School where we were last. Will has very good English skills and also enjoys the subjects English and Media. Will like me is very good at Literature and a feel that we both work well together as a team. Not only is Will good at English Language and Literature but he also has some knowledge within GCSE Media which he can share with me and help me overcome any obstacles I meet within Media. Hence why I picked Will as my partner to work with.

William does prefer to record me instead, however since we are just two people, we take it in turns to record or we can use a tripod to record both of us when needed. Will lets me edit as I have a lot of experience with editing as I do it in my spare time, making videos.

UPDATE:

Will Madden has currently dropped Media which leaves me on my own. However, I have met two people when I first came to Westwood called Joe and Zach. They will be helping me complete my Preliminary task, with the equipment and acting.
